Welcome to the Nunat Fish Observations Database
This database is for Villages to share information and photos of unusual fish.
That way Villages can learn from, and help each other.
What is unusual?
It can be a disease or deformity that is occurring more frequently, or that has not been seen before. It can be a different type of fish that is unusual to see in your area. It can be unusual fish behavior. It can be a discoloration or scars or wounds. It can be a different taste, or it might dry or cook different. It can be a different location in the river from where you normally see the fish at, or a different time of the year. With the thousands of years of detailed knowledge of fish patterns, Alaska Native people know what is different. Please share anything that is different.

Other Actions to Take:
Find out:
- What to do if you find an unusual fish. Different actions and examples.
- How to Test your fish if your fish is diseased or deformed Specific instructions
Why Was the Database Developed?
People have been concerned with some fish they are finding. They want to know what can be done, and if other Villages are finding the same thing. Many Villages ask where they can get their deformed fish tested.
What are the objectives of the Database?
- For villages to help villages in keeping informed about fish subsistence activities.
- To protect subsistence.
- To document in a written, central place the differences that people are seeing. This will help Villages, and university and agency fish scientists identify what is happening to fish. Funding to Villages and awareness by agencies can be brought to this issue.
- To identify the disease or deformity or fish type, and find out if it can affect the health or numbers of the fish, or if it is okay to eat or to feed to dogs.
